Kathleen Turner on Acting is basically an interview, albeit a long one that covers a long, varied career very thoroughly. I loved all the insights and insider jokes and especially Ms. Turner's take on her movies, her co-workers, and her methods of preparing and executing her interpretation of the great roles she has brought us over the years. I feel a binge watch coming on. She has played so many interesting characters, and seeing how she has chosen her work, how she has interacted with directors and actors to bring to the screen her version of the strong, independent women she has portrayed and is still portraying is gratifying. We all like to have our heroes presented in a good light. This book certainly does that - and in her own words.I received free electronic copy of this biography from Netgalley, Kathleen Turner and Dustin Morrow, and Skyhorse Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

I enjoyed reading this book, Turner is one of my favorite actresses from the 1980s. She offers safe advice on most apsoects of the difficult career of show business, from auditions to proper elocution. Along the way she shares snippets of her background and experiences in film and theater. I really enjoyed reading about three of her movies that I love the best: Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, and Peggy Sue Got Married. I watched those continuously on VHS in the 80s. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance read.

I love Kathleen Turner and this was an interesting read. This is my first time reading a book in the format of a conversation. Kudos to Dustin Morrow. The skill to format and make the conversations flow in print is very apparent. Here’s to more conversations in the future!

Kathleen Turner is one of the most iconic actors working in the business, and this book seeks to pin down her insights into her acting process. This is not necessarily something that should fill an entire book considering her mantra on acting is, “Shut up and do it.” However, Kathleen Turner is also incredibly smart, funny, and insightful, and she quickly shifts the conversation to cover her thoughts on the entire entertainment industry.In that regard, it works. Turner is a true conversationalist and is willing to face questions head-on. The book is made up of interviews edited down to one long discussion. Sometimes this results in light anecdotes from the filming process of Romancing the Stone, and other times it results in a deep discussion of performing eight shows a week with rheumatoid arthritis. All sides of her career, from theatre and film to political activism, are on display and all are equally enthralling.The interview is the perfect conceit to examine someone’s acting process. It’s a deeply personal way of approaching performance (as evidenced by many of Kathleen Turner’s own answers), and the back-and-forth leads to some forced introspection.Here, the questioning is conducted by Dustin Morrow, a film professor. For the most part, his questions are both apt and interesting. He deserves credit for covering most facets of her career as well as whittling the tome down to something manageable to both theatre practitioners and general readers. Occasionally, his opinions do seem intrusive to the questioning and it derails the overall flow from question to question. As well, some of the questions on theatre don’t appear to be at the same level as the film ones. Then again, when discussing Albee or High or working in the West End, Kathleen Turner seems even more animated and takes control of the discussion.Overall, this is a great examination of acting method from a remarkable actor.Note: I received a free ARC of this book through NetGalley.

The book provides good insights about how Harley-Davidson has successfully improved its product development process. Most of the problems described are well known by the community and the author has done a very good job in explaining them. However, when it comes to the solutions taken to fix those problems, the book is very superficial. Only short, generic descriptions are provided. The oobeya implementation, for instance, is highlighted as one of the main enablers of the structural changes that increased the product development rate. But, I've finished the book without a good understanding of how the oobeya has been implemented. This is the main reason for I rating the book with 3 stars.

This book is really approachable. I would have given it 5 stars but it could have used another round of editing to clean up duplicated content, use much better graphs/charts to underscore the authors point (graphics more often than not were not helpful in the kindle edition - better in print?) and to more closely align the reader to the internal elapsed timescale at Harley. The reader looses site of how long the journey is until the last chapter.Having said this the key learnings in this book around lean, product development and learning cycles are not to be missed especially if you are in the world of SAFe.

There are few opportunities to learn how organizations make the transformation to excellence. Oosterwal shares the actual experience in learning from the original researchers of Lean PD. Few works provide the practitioner with such insight into how one organization can change as well as general application to any enterprise seeking improvement in development effectiveness and efficiency. A very valuable contribution to our discipline.

This book is an interesting study on how Harley Davidson transformed their organization into a very different beast than it originally was. I loved the stories and hands-on learnings that is being shared.

A very clear and useful guide to appraise, question and enhance a company's product development process. Truly practical, grounded on the experience of one of the world's most admired and successful companies.

Who Is Bruce Springsteen?   December 1964   It was a cold winter day in northern New Jersey. A teenage boy brought his mother to the local music store. There, in the front window, was a black and gold electric guitar. The boy wanted it so much. He loved to play the guitar. But it cost sixty dollars. Back then, that was a lot of money. It was more money than his mother had. So they left the store without the guitar.   But that is not the end of the story. A few days later, the boy’s mother went to the bank and took out a loan. On Christmas Day, her son woke up to find the guitar waiting for him under the tree.   That teenage boy was Bruce Springsteen. And he grew up to become one of the most famous rock-and-roll stars ever. For forty years, people have been inspired by the messages in his songs. They are songs about the joy of being alive and the pain of a broken heart. They offer comfort during hard times. They make people proud to be Americans.   Bruce Springsteen never forgot that special guitar. It changed everything. In fact, when he was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, the first person he thanked was his mother. He thanked her for buying him that guitar and, most importantly, for believing in him.       Chapter 1: A Young Boy   Bruce Frederick Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949. He lived in Freehold, New Jersey, with his parents and two younger sisters, Virginia (called Ginny) and Pamela. Ginny was one and a half years younger than Bruce, but Pamela was much younger. Bruce was twelve when Pamela was born. Pamela was such a cute baby that Bruce didn’t mind helping out.   He liked playing with her or even giving hera bottle.   Freehold is a medium-size town located near the New Jersey shoreline, and about a ninety-minute drive from New York City. There were lots of farms and factories when Bruce was a boy. It was not a wealthy town. People in Freehold were mostly “blue collar” workers.   Most of the jobs in Freehold were at the local factories. The biggest was Nestlé, which produced chocolate bars and coffee. While Bruce was growing up, one of the big employers, a rug factory, left town. Jobs became harder to find. Bruce’s mother, Adele, worked as a secretary for a lawyer. She had a good job. However, Bruce’s father, Doug, had trouble finding steady work. For a while he drove taxis and trucks. At one point he was a prison guard.   To make ends meet, the Springsteens moved in with Doug’s parents after Bruce was born. They stayed for six years. Bruce’s grandparents lived in a house that had cracked walls, windows that rattled, and just one kerosene heater to warm the house in winter. His grandparents didn’t believe in a lot of rules for him. Bruce was allowed to stay up all night, watching television and playing with his toys.   As a little boy, Bruce loved to have books read aloud to him. One of his favorites was Brave Cowboy Bill. Bill had many adventures in the Wild West. Bruce was so crazy about the story that soon he knew all the words by heart.   When Bruce was old enough, his mother sent him to a Catholic school. Bruce did not like it one bit! There were so many rules, and the nuns were very strict. One time in third grade, a nun stuffed him in a trash can!   Why?   She said the trash can was where he belonged. As if he were no better than garbage! Bruce spent time in the principal’s office, too. He was not a bad kid. He was just different. He liked to be alone with his thoughts. Not all the time, of course. He also liked to hang out with other kids, play baseball, and read Archie comics.   Bruce enjoyed spending time with his mother. Adele also loved music. She’d play the radio in the kitchen, singing and dancing while making breakfast. Bruce sang and danced right along with her.   Adele introduced Bruce to all kinds of music—pop, rock and roll, country, and folk music. One night in 1957, Adele let Bruce stay up late to watch The Ed Sullivan Show on television. Elvis Presley was performing, and Bruce could not take his eyes off him. Elvis wasn’t afraid to be different, and he looked like he was having so much fun onstage. After seeing Elvis, Bruce wanted his own guitar. If Elvis could be a rock star, why couldn’t he?   As Bruce grew older, all he could think about was rock-and-roll music. When he was fourteen, he was riding in the car with his mom, listening to the radio. The Beatles song “I Want to Hold Your Hand” started to play.   As soon as Bruce’s mom stopped the car, Bruce jumped out and ran to the nearest pay phone. He had to call his girlfriend. He couldn’t wait to tell her about the awesome song he had just heard.   Then, in 1964, Bruce got that special guitar for Christmas. From then on, Bruce practiced every day. He said, “It took over my whole life. . . . Everything from then on revolved around music. Everything.” Sometimes Bruce would play the guitar and watch himself in the mirror. Even though Bruce was just a skinny boy with dark curly hair, he liked what he saw. When he held his guitar, he felt powerful.

First of all I'm biased because if it's about Springsteen it can't be bad! That said, I love it. This is my first book from this series and I'll be ordering more for my son and I. The boy needs his rock and roll history!

My six-year old son wanted to read about this rock star guy when he saw the book at the library. We checked the book out, but he was only half way done when the book was due. So, I took the book back to the library and decided to buy the book on Amazon so that he can take his time because he likes to switch to reading different the books by the day. He enjoys reading this book to learn about a rock star's life, and like it because it introduced him to new words. The George Washington book from the same book series is next for him, and I hope that is brings the same reading success.

Great book with all the facts you need to know about Bruce. At a childs level. Easy reading. Definitely recommend this book along with all the other Who;s or What's this series. Perfect fun books with loads of info. Perfect for a gift too.

Note: I was privileged to hear the first chapter of this novel when it was finished at a Hedgebrook residency (we all cheered), and this particular review is based on an advance copy of the book, where I finally got to find out what happened to Charlie and his family. :)Someday Birds is a charming, bird-laden adventure tale that explores both family trip dynamics and the progress of a young boy in facing what makes him most anxious, and what makes him most himself.Charlie is the middle brother in a family of four – 2 10-year-old twin brothers, and teenaged elder sister – and the narrator of this tale. His father, a journalist injured in Afghanistan, is transferred for medical care to the other side of the country. The only other caregiver, Grandma, goes with the father – and then adventures ensue as the kids determine they will not be left behind in the hands of mysterious pink-haired Ludmila.What makes this book so powerful from the get-go is Charlie’s engaging voice and the lens with which he views the world consistently, perfectly, and always a bit askew. We understand that he is fascinated by birds, and his bird guru, Tiberius Shaw, will maintain a central current running through the group (after all Someday Birds is the title). But it’s the little things Charlie notices – from the idiosyncracies of bad rest stops to the perfection of the perfect chicken nuggets to the way that even translated emotions don’t stay translated- that make this book a marvel. Charlie’s voice is perfect to the task of leading us cross-country with his siblings, and it’s not really the destination (Dad’s hospital bed) that makes this book, it’s the journey we take with Charlie as our guide that makes the experience.Another aspect of the book that gives it deeper complexity and warmth is the development of Ludmila’s character and the unveiling of why she seems so fascinated with Charlie’s father and willing to help the children make the cross-country trip. Her network of friends in different places, and the aptly told opening dynamics between her and the children as they compete for the father’s attention in the hospital set the stage for interesting revelations.I highly recommend Someday Birds for middle grade readers and the adults that care about them.

A compelling, poignant and funny tale as appealing to adults as to the middle school children to whom the book is targeted. I bought this book for my 10 year old nephew but read it myself before giving it to him. I fell in love with Charlie -- and the book -- from the first pages. All the characters are finely drawn but Charlie ... well, Charlie is the most touching character since Oskar in Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Both boys are on a journey, far outside their comfort zone, and find that it's by reaching out and forming relationships that they unfurl their inner selves, find their wings and begin to soar. There is lots of warmth and humor as Charlie and his slightly kooky family embark on a cross-country journey and come together to bond, heal and grow.For children who feel a little bit different from others, for jumbled-up families who care about each other but don't know how to show it, for parents and grandparents who ache for the child they love and understand that it's our differences that enrich us all, this book is a treasure.

I know this book is aimed for younger audiences, but my Book Club read it and it was a lovely story and inspiring, too. We e had a great discussion about Charlie's journey both across the country and his journey as a more mature individual. Charlie is a boy on the Autism Spectrum and lives with a family where you grow to love each character. Pla is a gifted writer and paints a picture of their family's life. I loved how Charlie made a list of "Someday Birds" he wanted to see and share with his dad who was injured and hospitalized on the east coast. His journey finding these birds makes you cheer for every one he finds. My only disappointment was that he did not stop at the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin, one of the greatest birding sites in the world. This is a book of hope and I would strongly recommend it.

As the mother of a child on the autism spectrum, I applaud Sally Pla, not just for writing such a heartfelt, touching story, but for her honest, respectful depiction of Charlie. Charlie has OCD/ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). His routine is suddenly uprooted when his siblings and their mysterious babysitter Ludmila go on a cross-country trip to be with Charlie’s father in a hospital in Virginia. Charlie’s world assaults him on their cross country road trip. New smells, foods, people, and experiences are thrust upon him. Along the way, Charlie adopts a three-legged dog that he names after his bird guru hero, Tiberius Shaw; the dog smells, but that’s okay. In fact, a lot of things that would have upset Charlie before are suddenly becoming a little easier to bear. Sally’s honest writing makes Charlie’s inner thoughts, anxieties, and compassion ring true throughout this charming page-turner.

I finished the last pages of THE SOMEDAY BIRDS with a lump in my throat. What a heartfelt debut. I loved every moment I spent on this zany, cross-country journey with Charlie and his family in a clunky camper called "Old Bess". This books touches on so much, I'm not even sure where to start - history, geography, neurodiversity, war, family, and the handling of nature with the utmost care. And while some parts are yes, heavy, Pla never leaves her readers feeling hopeless. She treats every topic with grace and respect. I loved Charlie's voice, his deadpan wit, and his literal view of the world. But the real gem I gleamed from birding with Charlie is that life is hard, but there is always hope.

The third edition of Alan Watt's 3D Computer Graphics, a bible of computer graphics, includes a CD-ROM full of examples and updated information on graphics and rendering algorithms. The book discusses many of the techniques that have evolved in the seven years since the previous edition was published. 3D Computer Graphics is a textbook, and it's designed for serious programmers creating graphics applications (not end users). Over the course of 16 sections, Watt introduces the concepts and implementation of computer imaging, from "Mathematical Fundamentals of Computer Graphics" to "Representation and Rendering" and ending with "Image-Based Rendering and Photo-Modeling." The last section, devoted to computer animation, includes methods for linked structures, collision detection, and particle animation (to name a few). Although the topics are sometimes hard to grasp, Mr. Watt writes clearly and concisely, making generous use of diagrams to help convey the principles described in the text. The accompanying CD-ROM includes over a dozen studies of computer graphics techniques and rendering algorithms. Presented in HTML, the exhaustive studies, each with a matrix of thumbnails, demonstrates the varied achievable results. One minor complaint here: although the thumbnails can be clicked to view a much larger image, the larger versions come in .tif format, which few (if any) Web browsers can view. The other reviews are right that this is not a beginner's book. However, it is a terrific book for those that are familiar with the basics of graphics and want to learn a very modern view of modeling and rendering. There are a few rough spots, but overall the book is well-written, nicely illustrated, and extremely up-to-date. Also, the author really seems to understand the material in both rendering and modeling. That alone makes the book a real treat.

Good quality!

I have an earlier version of this book and I've always found it to be one that I return to time and again. It was one of the first three graphics programming books I bought during the same early career book shopping session, it was definately the most useful of the three and it's stayed with me ever since, where other books have been and gone.It's generally very easy to read and very informative. It has a good progression of topics that introduce the reader to graphics programming concepts.The thing I most like about this is that it covers much of the foley and van dam book, but avoids the many irrelevant sections and is a little more to the point. It's like a more concise reference to that book, which is also one that I would recommend.The only thing I don't like about the updated version is the new layout, typeface and style. The old version just seems so much more appealing to me.If you program game or computer graphics, then this is a reliable book to have in your collection.

Wow, this book had the potential of being so much better. The organization is in, I find, a very odd colated fashion. This has the effect of confusing even the most capable reader not already familiar with the various implementations. For instance: with the section on "Viewing Systems" there are 5 five such systems described. Instead of giving a complete account of any one in any one place, like aspects of each are distributed in groups across the section. This makes things very difficult on the novice who is seeking to first form a general abraction of a process before proceeding to gather the details. The only source in the book is a wireframe implementation in one of the appendices; I did not mind this per se, however it's rendered in of all languages PASCAL!! (I have a particular dislike of the language if you can't tell) Apparently C was JUST becoming popular when and where the book was written. Experts in the field of Computer Graphics are, I imagine, more likely to take to this book with an appreciation of it's merits.All things aside however this is a fairly comprehensive book and a worthy addition to any programmer's library. Novices (teen game programmers like myself especially!) take heed that some patience may be required and some brain-power to spare wouldn't be bad either.

Contrary to what the other reviews say, I believe this is an excellent book for beginners in the 3D computer graphics world. However, that being said, you will need some basic math skills to be able to understand and apply the concepts in this book. If you are unfamilar with linear algebra, you should probably start with studying up on your math skills first. With the basic math skills, this book does a great job of introducing the basics to almost every major topic you'll see in 3D computer graphics programming. The book doesn't go into great detail at times, but the simplicity of this book is the winning ingredient that allows beginners to grasp the basics before moving on to indepth research in paticular topics of 3D graphics that interest them.

This is an excellent book for all those who want to delve into the theory and process of computer graphics. Some basic concepts are covered in vague detail, and some other reading into concepts such as vector maths, are required. But it provides a solid foundation for programmers, artists, and the alike. The book is not terribly detailed, thus may not serve the purposes of an advance CG artist. But regardless, a book that I will be refering to a lot.
