From the Inside Flap

"What an eye-opening book!" The event we assumed to be a media-made holiday turns out to be a rich and fascinating piece of folklore." --JANE AND MICHAEL STERN "Groundhog Day, a much misunderstood holiday, finally has a book that does it justice. And who better to write it than the acknowledged master of American folklife studies, Don Yoder? This is a very well written book about a very long tradition, tracing the origin of Ground Hog Day back to Germanic legends and, in the U.S., crediting German settlers with popularizing the holiday.Yoder early attempts at meteorology included trying to predict future weather cycles based on moon phases and time of year. A bit of old Scottish doggerel sums up the belief about Candlemas, sometimes credited as the source of the holiday:If Candlemass Day be dry and fair,The half o’winter’s to come and mair [more];If Candlemass Day be wet and foul,The half of winter’s gane [gone] at Yule. One point I would like to make: professionals often point out that Phil is wrong 60% of the time, crediting Phil with accuracy only 40% of the time. "You would be better off flipping an honest coin rather than consulting Phil" according to a recent press release.I beg to differ. It may be people who have the interpretation wrong. As far as I have been able to determine, no one has ever actually spoken with Phil or any of his species.Perhaps if there is no shadow, Phil goes back because he knows there are six more weeks of winter. A shadow is good news because the sun is shining and he stays out. Makes perfect sense to me, but then I'm not a ground hog so what do I know. But I can do the sums., and if you merely reverse the message, Phil becomes accurate 60% of the time, better than any old honest coin at predicting the weather.Robert C. RossFebruary 2019

For many people, Groundhog Day is a quaint blip of a holiday; a 30 second spot on the February 2nd nightly news in which a well-fed woodchuck is pulled out of his hole by a man wearing a top hat, subsequently followed (in the majority of years) with a "shadow sighting" and 6 more weeks of winter. However, in reality, this relatively bizarre celebration has its roots in pre-historic European origins and customs. Don Yoder's fast-paced and entertaining book traces contemporary Groundhog Day festivities, ancient practices associated with the holiday, and the inextricable links between Pennsylvania Dutch culture, groundhog folklore, and weather prognostication. This is a charming piece of writing that, more than anything, introduces the reader to the underpinnings of Pennsylvania Dutch culture, and how Groundhog Day serves as a linchpin for that culture.

Read about this phenomenom by a noted historain and recorder of culture and History.

I wanted to like this- to support a PA tradition but! I'd suggest making the trek to Punxsutawney instead of reading the book!
