Review

"Vividly recounted. . . the essential text on the country's disintegration. Wehrey has repeatedly ventured to a place largely ignored by the Western press, often considered too dangerous." ―Dexter Filkins, New York Times Book Review                                                                                               "Impartial and engrossing, this is one of the few accessible introductions to the contours of a conflict that the West has chosen almost entirely to ignore."―Publishers Weekly                                                                          "An engaging blend of memoir, investigation, history and reportage. . . replete with telling details and rich portraits. . . a definitive account of the [Benghazi] attack"―Hussein Ibish, BookForum                                                                         "The Burning Shores is an exceptional book. While a number of studies of the 17 February revolution have been published in recent years... this is the best to appear so far. It is authoritative, informative, accessible and should stand the test of time."―Ronald Bruce St John, International Affairs                                                                                           "Cinematically vivid. . . A deeply impressive work of first-hand reporting." ―Steve Donoghue, The National   "Wehrey provides an insightful explanation of the difficulties facing the United States and other nations to stabilize a ravaged country. . . His analysis is sobering for American policymakers and tragic for Libyans. Highly recommended.―Elizabeth Hayford, Library Journal (starred review)             "Remarkable for its accessibility and clarity...With a lively and humane pen, [Wehrey] sketches the rough and sometimes dizzying path of this wealthy North African state with a small population ... The Burning Shores avoids the abstract jargon of political scientists and the paternalism of sociologists."--Jalel Harchaoui, Politique étrangère"A searing tale of violence, chaos, and unintended consequences in post-Gadhafi Libya . . . Essential reading." ―Kirkus Reviews"Frederic Wehrey's book is a masterpiece: an authoritative history of Libya's tragic descent into chaos and a riveting narrative. This is an essential story...and Wehrey is the ideal person to tell it. His deep knowledge of the country and of the American role there―political and military―shines through on every page." ―Robert F. Worth, contributing writer, New York Times magazine, and author of A Rage for Order: The Middle East in Turmoil, from Tahrir Square to ISIS"A vividly detailed, elegantly written portrait of Libya in turmoil. A gifted storyteller and accomplished scholar, Frederic Wehrey brings Libya's tragedy to life...A wonderfully readable and insightful book." ―Ambassador William J. Burns, President, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and former Deputy Secretary of State"Libya's heartbreaking descent into civil war after the uprising against Qadhafi's tyranny is recounted here with authority, sympathy, and daring. Frederic Wehrey is one of the world's most knowledgeable Libya watchers...If you read only one book about this North African tragedy, read The Burning Shores." ―Lisa Anderson, Dean Emerita, Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, and author of The State and Social Transformation in Tunisia and Libya, 1830 -1980and other books "With refreshing clarity of mind, of purpose, and considerable personal courage, Frederic Wehrey has written an excellent narrative history of Libya's catastrophic undoing. For anyone seeking a nonpartisan, coherent accounting of what has gone wrong in Libya since Qadhafi's fall from power, including the circumstances of the tragic death of U.S. ambassador J. Christopher Stevens in Benghazi, this is the book to read." ―Jon Lee Anderson, The New Yorker staff writer, and author of The Fall of Baghdad

I read this book in preparation for a new job in Libya. I wanted something focusing on post-2011 Libya, and something that went beyond just the initial overthrow of Qadhafi. This book delivered. It covers a bit of Qadhafi-era politics, a large chunk on the revolution and fall of Qadhafi, and then, uniquely, the second half of the book follows the course of Libya after the overthrow Qadhafi up until 2017, including the migrant crisis, the Tuaregs and politics of southern Libya, the incident at the US consulate in Benghazi, as well as ISIS's expansion into Libya. It's a well-written book: easy to digest, and great for anyone looking to get completely up to speed on the country quickly.

The author has inside knowledge of the situation on the ground in Libya and therefore I found this book highly informative. I recommend it to all readers interested in the region, and all readers generally interested in understanding the problems faced when trying to bring peace and democracy to some societies.

Great book and great service!!

The US intervention in Libya was both one of President Obama's most consequential foreign policy decisions and one of the most ignored. Aside from the 2012 Benghazi attack, most Americans paid scant attention to this country after Gaddafi's death. The US bears significant blame for what happened during the aftermath of the intervention, yet we have accepted precious little responsibility. Frederic Wehrey's "The Burning Shores" is an important corrective to our myopic attitude towards this country.Wehrey's book focuses on the aftermath of the intervention, particularly the civil war between the western and eastern halves of the country. Wehrey, who spent considerable time in Gaddafi's Libya, chronicles how and why the country fell apart and reverted to authoritarianism. Much of the book focuses on the politics and decisions by foreign actors that contributed to this mess. In particular, he blames the Obama administration and the EU for not investing more in nation-building. However, the best parts of the book focus on the people, the Libyans themselves. Wehrey interviewed a fascinating cast of characters, from former revolutionaries to elite power players. The focus on people really helps bring the country alive for readers.I recommend this book to students of foreign policy in the Middle East, but also to anyone who wants to seriously understand the consequences of It's an important reminder that what seemed to us like a relatively minor policy decision had profound repercussions in a country far away.

I heard about this book during an interview with the author on NPR and decided to give it a try. Knowing very little about the state of Libya after the fall of Gaddafi, I found this book incredibly informative and enlightening. Wehrey does a very good job of looking at the issues from all angles, and describing the motivations of each of the factions. In addition to being very informative, the book is a page turner, and is hard to put down. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Libya or the Mid East in general.

Artfully written, fascinating read - a definite buy
