Veteran builder and writer Dennis Parks walks you through the whole process, whether you’re modifying a ’32 Ford or building a chassis from scratch, finding and using existing body panels or choosing New Old Stock panels from the aftermarket. This book is perfect if you're getting into building your own hot rod or car. I started my first build this past winter and quickly realized there were a HUGE amount of decisions to make and I know very little about most of them. For someone like me, this book is perfect and makes for a solid starting point. If you've built a few cars, this book likely won't be all that helpful. This book DOES have some 'how to / project' components, which are definitely helpful. But, like everything, there's probably 5-10 ways to do any one thing and this won't cover them all in depth (but that's why they make more topic-specific books). I actually liked this about it; the book sets up a nice foundation for you to research more later. And if you're chomping at the bit, you could get started with this book. To that end, it really covers a comprehensive list of topics and I have learned a huge amount from this book. And it also feels 'up to date' with more recent pictures. I don't know why this is such a big deal to me -- a technique is a technique -- but I find myself trusting this one more because of it.And here's the most valuable thing I can think to provide, its Table of Contents:1: Tools (Pneumatic, Bench, Hand, Portable)2: Chassis Work (Repairing Existing Chassis, Installing Aftermarket Trans Cross Member, Building New Chassis, Safety Wiring Rotors)3: Hot Rod Body Repair (Rust/Paint Removal, Patch/Replace Panels, Replacing Door Bottoms, Installing Patch Panel, Filling Holes / Dings, Filling Bigger Holes)4: Reproduction Bodies (Storage, Mounting Body on Chassis, Installing Fenders, Baking Fiberglass, Bracing, Protecting Steel Bodies)5: Working With Metal (Making Patterns, Cutting, Straightening, Bending, Building Fuel Tank, Making 3-Piece Hood, Punching Louvers, Bead Rolling / Making Flanges, Hammer Forging, Building Flat Dash w/ Round Edge, Fastening, Smoothing Bumper)6: Painting: Preparation (Surface Prep, Undercoats, Block Sanding / Applying Sealer)7: Painting: Color and Top Coats (Base Coat to Pinstripe)
The first 27 pages is devoted to tool types very basic stuff. If you dont have the tools or knowledge what they can do you shouldnt be attempting to build anything. Like telling someone to build a house and explaining what a hammer is for. The book seems to touch on alot of things but very basic stuff. Nothing is mentioned about z ing a frame or any other types of frame mods. Maybe its a liability issue. If you are a novice and dont know much this is the book for you. I am not a professional but have built several cars and this book lacks getting deep into one particular subject just touching on all the basic things.
Great book. Quality pictures and info. Helped me build my 39' chevy truck.
Helpful for beginners
good for old school bild
Not nearly the information as expected, very little general content
I did not find it that particularly informative.
