This a a fantastic book! Top notch writing about a man that was an enigma to friends and fans. It will appeal to hardcore Prince fans, as well as the more casual reader. The Prologue addresses the final months of Prince's life directly and respectfully. From the beginning of the book, it is clear that the authors are both true fans of the artist, but also talented writers wanting to provide readers with objective insight into the person behind the persona.This book calls to mind stories told by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, "Outliers." Prince, like The Beatles and the original giants of the Silicon Valley, had an enormous gift of inherent talent. However, talent alone was not all that made Prince or these other greats what they were. The rare confluence of talent, extreme dedication to one's craft and the luck of being surrounded by the right people in the right place at the right time was the essential key. The book is at its best when analyzing the factors that influenced the rise of Prince, in spite of the odds.As a transplant to the Twin Cities four years ago, I had a hard time reconciling the Prince I had watched growing up with the pristine city he called home his whole life. The authors do an excellent job of giving the reader historical background on Minnesota, the Great Migration and American music roots to help explain how such a funky and controversial individual could come out of a land that is so bland (at least on the surface). I felt that this book gave me a better understanding and appreciation of my new hometown.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this book. It's very well written, and contains great information of Prince's first 30 years as well as the last year of his life.We all know Prince had peaks and valleys as far as commercial success, people relationships, business relationships, etc. The book certainly addresses all those, but does so in a manner that is factual and informative, but not salacious or disparaging. It doesn't hide anything, but presents his life within the context of an artist that was one of the most gifted humans ever, but also human like everyone else.I would definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about Prince and his life during this era.

First of all, this book was really hard to put down -- I read it almost constantly until I finished, so that's the first positive endorsement. The authors did a great job presenting in detail what I now know to be huge contradictions in Prince: sorely in need of love, yet essentially abandoned by his parents and then later treating those closest to him coldly, and to his love interests, worse. And yet, they set up his childhood so well, I still always felt empathy for him, even when I didn't like his later actions. The narrative regarding how truly hard he worked, and how brilliant he was I always knew at some level, but Laura and Alex found and told such great stories so you end up truly appreciating that part of Prince's "brand." The opioid use gets a glance, probably a good thing because that's just the sad, same story you always hear. Although, the authors' description of his frantic last months and weeks traveling and performing show someone that was clearly still committed to his fans, and to growing as a performer. This again left me feeling more empathy for Prince. This was a great read!

This is an excellent book and I truly recommend it for any Prince casual or serious fan. I have already read several books on Prince, which is now my favorite past time. I did not read books on Prince when he was alive but since his passing, I want to read everything I can. Just his music was enough and still is for me but also knowing about the man himself, both the positive and negatives, helps me understand him more as a person. Even after reading several books on Prince, I found this one to have background and stories I have not heard before. I am going to purchase one for my niece since I do not want to part with mine. She is often asking me about Prince so now she can learn more about him as I have. This book is now at the top of my list of favorite Prince books.

There’s a certain cachet that comes with being able to hack up Linux, Darwin or UNIX boxes. Being able to write scripts is immensely helpful, but there’s always that knowing glance, that little nod, that holdover from the days of “Name That Tune”, where instead of saying “I can name that tune in one note”, the command line geek smiles and says "I can take care of that task with one line”.Granted, those “one-liners" are often rather involved. Lots of pipes and tees and redirects, to be sure, but somehow, they can actually be said to be “one line fixes” or “one line scripts”. I currently work in an environment where Perl is still in active rotation. I used to write CGI programs in Perl once upon a time (and still maintain some of them to this day). I’ve always appreciated the ability to do things in one line, and in many ways, it’s a neat way to learn some of the more oddball syntax options of both the shell and a given utility, and actually put them into use. All this is my building up to the fact that, when I saw the listing for Peteris Krumins “Perl One-Liners: 130 Programs that Get Things Done”, it just begged for me to say “Oh please, let me review this!”The back cover makes the following claim:"Save time and sharpen your coding skills as you learn to conquer those pesky tasks in a few precisely placed keystrokes with Perl One-Liners."So how does it stack up?Chapter 1 is meant to help orient the reader towards the idea of a one-line fix or utility. Fact is, a lot of what we do are one-offs, or are tasks that we may need to do one time, but for dozens or even hundred of files. Some knowledge of Perl is helpful, but many of the commands can just be typed in as is, examine the changes made, and work backwards. Windows users need to do a little tweaking to some of the commands, and Appendix B is here to help you do exactly that. Also, if you see examples that make you want to scratch your head (trust me, you will), there’s always perldoc, which will explain those areas you struggle with.Chapter 2 looks at spacing, or more to the point, giving you control over just how much you want or can see. Each example explains the steps and the actions each command will perform. Various command line options like -e allow the user to iterate a while loop on every line in a file, so passing a variable parameter sets up an entire while loop. Lots of fascinating variations, each one doing something interesting, some easy to understand, and some bring cryptic to a new level ("perl -00pe0” anyone? Yes, Peteris explains it, and yes, it is pretty cool).Chapter 3 covers Numbering, and a variety of quick methods to play and tweak with numbering lines and words. The “$." special variable gets covered (thinking it might have something to do with the line number of whatever you are interacting with? You’d be right!), as well as a game called "Perl golfing", which I guess is the Perl equivalent of my aforementioned “name that tune”.Chapter 4 deal with Calculations. Want to do on the fly counting? Want to shuffle elements? Figure out if numbers are prime or non-prime? Determine a date based on an input? This chapter’s got you covered.Chapter 5 focuses on Arrays and Strings. Want to create your open password generator? Figure out ranges? Determine what a decimal value is in Hex, and vice versa? Oooh, I know, how about creating strings of various characteristics to use for text input (come on testers, you were all thinking it ;) )? Maybe generating your own personal offset code to semi-encrypt your messages sounds like fun. There’s plenty here to help you do that. Of course, if that last one seems interesting, the next chapter offers some better options ;).Chapter 6 deals with Text Conversion and Substitution. Apply base64 encoding and decoding (OK, much more effective, but maybe not quite as fun as making your own raw version), creating HTML or deconstructing HTML, creating or breaking up URLs, and a bunch of operators that allow for all sorts of interesting string manipulations.Chapter 7 covers Selectively Printing and Deleting Lines. Typically, a one liner that can selectively print can be tweaked to selectively remove, and vice versa. Look for and print lines that repeat, or those that match a particular pattern (and of course, apply similar rules to remove lines that meet your criteria as well).Chapter 8 brings us to Useful Regular Expressions, and Perl has a monster of a regular expression engine. Rather than give an exhaustive rundown, Peteris focuses on regex patterns that we might use, well, regularly. Finding and matching IP addresses and subnet masks, parsing HTTP headers, validating email addresses, extracting and changing values and many others. This chapter alone is worth the price of purchase.The book ends with three Appendices. Appendix A gives a listing of Perl’s Special Variables, and how to use them in their context (with more one liner examples). Appendix B is all about Perl One-Liners on Windows, including setting up Perl, getting Bash on Windows, running the one liners from the command prompt or PowerShell, and the oddities that makes Windows, well, Windows, and how to leverage the book to work in that ever so fascinating environment. Appendix C is basically a print out of all the Perl one-liners in the book. It can be downloaded and examined as a quick “how do I do that again?” from one file.Bottom Line:This is a tinkerer’s dream. What’s more, its a book that you can grab at any old time and play with for the fun of it, and yes, this book is FUN. You may be an old hand at Perl, you may be a novice, or maybe you’ve never touched a line of Perl code in your life. If you want to accomplish some irksome tasks, it’s a good bet there’s something in here that will help you do what you need to. If the exact match isn’t to be found, it takes very few jumps to get to something you can use and work with, novice and guru alike. You might think it would be ridiculous to say to yourself “hey, I have a few minutes to spare, I think I’ll try out some Perl One-Liners for fun”. Maybe I’m weird, but that’s exactly what I find myself doing. It’s the coders equivalent to a Facebook game, but be warned, a few minutes can become a couple of hours if you’re not careful. Yes, that’s hyperbole, and at the same time, it isn’t. Perl One-Liners is seriously fun, and a wonderful “tech book” for the short attention span readers among us. You may find yourself turning to it again and again. My advice, just roll with it :).

Perl one-liners are an important part of its power and flexibility. The ability to process a file quickly without having to write a program is often really useful. Any Perl programmers should take the time to get to know the command like switches that make this possible. This book is a pretty good introduction to this way of using Perl.So why only three stars? Well, I have a couple of reservations about the book. Firstly, there are a few technical errors which the editors should have caught. For example, a few times the author refers to "array context" where he means "list context". The difference between arrays and lists is often difficult for beginners to master and it doesn't help when books blur the distinction.My other reservation is with the programs themselves. The book boasts "130 programs that get things done". But I think they have had to stretch things a bit to get to that number. One program might be "print lines that match a pattern". Then the next program will be "print lines that don't match a pattern". I'm not sure that inverting the logic in a one-liner is enough of a difference to justify counting it separately. Sometimes you'll come across two or three pages of examples all of which are only tiny permutations of each other.But it's good to see publishers bringing out books on Perl. And this is certainly an area of Perl that hasn't received much coverage before. I just think it's a rather thin concept to spin out to a book. Even this stretched, it's a rather thin book (140 pages - 50 of which are appendices). It might have been better as a cheap Kindle-only publication.

I require this book as part of the curriculum for my 85 hour prenatal yoga teacher training. I chose this book because of it's ability to educate students in the basics of Ayurveda during pregnancy. I think that the author did a great job synthesizing some very complex material into layman's terms. My trainees always really enjoy this book. I think the postpartum section could be a bit more comprehensive.

There were many tips from this book that I used in my pregnancy. The parts on antithesis diet for specific dosha were very interesting. Some advices were bit unrealistic to follow especially the extensive journaling. Overall I would recommend this book for those future mommies that have interest in yoga,ayurveda and more holistic approach to pregnancy

Has a lot of interesting information that I haven't read yet in alternative pregnancy approaches.

This book was a reading assignment for my Ayurveda training. It is just full of great information for the expectant woman. It was a great read even though I had my children long ago!

pretty good reference for an Ayurvedic pregnancy. not necessarily strictly Ayurvedic in recommendations, but definitely a good reference to have along with the more general books such as Svoboda Ayurveda for Women.

This novel is not easy for me to review since I’ve seen the movie first. In truth, I didn’t even know it was a book until I seen it on the shelf in the library a few years back. I wished I would of check it out then. At the same time, I’m not sure that having done that, I would have read The Rules of Magic because while this story is great, there are years (22 years) of storytelling experience between Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still well-written, but there is a difference. Overall, it’s still another great story of the bonds of sisterhood, the tragedy, and triumph of love. Another great adventure by Alice Hoffman.In this novel, you get all the great magical prose as you do in The Rules of Magic. The storyline is similar, but with drastically different life experiences, content, and events. I loved that as it added to the whole Owens women are all destined for an enchanting life vibe.I’m sure some want to know how it compares to the movie. You can’t compare the two. They are peas and carrots. I can’t say I like one better than the other because this novel is very different from the movie. With the novel, there is more depth about Sally and Gillian’s life from childhood to adulthood. Even better, there is more narrative for Antonia and Kylie as they grow into their teens.I love the movie and I always will, but I love the book differently. Either way, I adore this family of sincere and driven women and the final page brought on the same dread as the last page of The Rules of Magic. I simply didn’t want it to end.

To preface my review I felt it necessary to mention that I read the prequel to this book titled, The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman prior to reading Practical Magic. Since Fall had finally begun and Halloween (my favorite holiday) was right around the corner reading Practical Magic just felt right . In my opinion reading the perquel helped me to better understand the history of the Owens family curse and the role it has played for generations. You cannot help but fall in love with ALL the Owens women including the ancient and mysterious aunts Francis and Jet (the main characters in the prequel) who took up residence in the infamous Owens family home established by their ancestor Maria Owens Hundreds of earlier. The aunts also took over the "family business" of magic...creating potions, remidies and of course the art of spell casting that has been passed down from generation to generation. The main characters in Practical Magic, sisters Sally and Gillian find themselves parentless and orphaned with only the aunts to turn to. Their world is completely turned upside down in a single evening and when the girls arrive at their aunts they soon discover the truth of who and what they really are. It seems that through out history the Owens women have tried to deny, hid and run away from who they really are, but fate always has its way of bringing out the truth and bringing the sisters and their aunts back together. Sally and Gillian are complete opposites from day one, but blood, family, the curse and of course love brings this family closer and closer. This book is a true testament to the powerful bond of sisters, the importance of family and the dangers that await along the road to self acceptance. There is also a movie called Practical Magic that is based on this book, if you love the book I would recommend watching the movie as well...but read the book and/or books first. Honestly, you should ready both books: The Rules of Magic (prequel) and Practical Magic prior to watching the movie Practical Magic. This was a fast but great weekend read. I highly recommend reading both books in this series by Alice Hoffman and if you enjoyed them watch the movie. The book of course was better than the movie with a few different twists. Nicole Kidman (Gillian Owens) and Sandra Bullock (Sally Owens) bring this story to life in the movie Practical Magic, they could not have picked 2 better women to play these fabulous characters Alice Hoffman worked to hard to create.

I was excited when I found out this book was real. I grew up watching the movie and I had fell in love with how in the MOVIE the sisters had an unbreakable bond and the aunts were they type of aunts I desperately wished I had growing up. Aunts who let the girls eat chocolate for breakfast, did magical spells in the kitchen, wore purple and made midnight margaritas. However, aunts in the book are very different from the film. They are much older and much creepier. The book doesn't really talk about a family curse that the Owens women are plagued with but as you read you find the sad truth of just how the "cruse" started and how it trickled down to Sally and Gillian.The book is almost the opposite from the film in every way. Sally and Gillian are sisters that lose their parents and are sent to live with their aunts who are the local witches in a very small and close-minded town. The aunts pretty much let the girls raise themselves which causes Sally to become the logical one who always had to think and calculate every step before she takes it and Gillian who throws caution to the wind and wears her heart of her sleeve. In the book, Sally is very resentful of her sister and at times hates her. The book is well written but tends to drift off in places. One moment you're reading about how difficult of a time Sally is having raising her teenage daughters and the next you're reading about the thoughts of a pizza delivery boy who makes a brief appearance in one paragraph.Sally loses her husband in a freak accident and then spends a year basically as a mute who ignores her daughters and responsibilities as a mother. Gillian marries many times and leaves her husbands heartbroken because the sparks has gone out for her and she finds herself in a bored. Hoffman describes the way the sisters fall in love with their "true loves" like being struck by lightning. When Gillian shows up at her sisters place - after having not seen each other for many years - with her dead boyfriend she is in desperate need of help. The book and film are two different types of stories. The movie leaves out so much and changes important plot points. The book in its own way is beautifully written and a very different type of love story. Not my usual cup of tea...but I defiantly would recommend it.

"John C. Schubert was born in San Francisco and received a BA degree in anthropology at Sonoma State University. He has been known as the Russian River historian since 1960 and has written for several Guerneville newspapers. He worked as a Sonoma County deputy sheriff for thirty-nine years and is a former marine. He has three sons; Keith, Hilmar and Preston; and five grandchildren; Jasmine, Sabrina, Johnna, Heather and Doran. He resides in the town of Guerneville, California, with Sarah, his companion of thirty-three years.Valerie A. Munthe was born on the Bay Area peninsula and raised in her family's summer cabin just east of Guerneville. Hidden History of Sonoma County is a well-researched and well-written history of early Sonoma County, California. The detail is impressive and reflects the author’s passion for history. I was particularly pleased with Chapter 7, “Hanging at Gravel Slough.” I had known bits and pieces of the story of the lynching of Charles Hendley back in 1876, but John Schubert did an outstanding job of filling in all the details. Well done!

Cool book! Some interesting history of the county. Easy to read, language plain and straight forward.
