I read a lot of travel books and plan pretty much all of our family trips on my own, with only a few exceptions. My family of 5 has been on 6 continents and 30 countries; we need to cross off Antartica. I've recently wanted to see more of our own country, as we have seen a lot, but there's still so much left. I've used Frommer's, Fodor's, Lonely Planet, Google, Tripadvisor, anything I can to help me research a place. The title of this book is great and I was SO excited to get it and start planning. On the front cover at the bottom of the title, it says "where to go, when to go, what to see, what to do." I was highly disappointed. The book has a nice sturdy, "hard" cover, although it's paperback; the pages have decent pictures and the quality of the pages are nice. But aside from that, it significantly lacks in detail. I'm not asking for in depth history of each state (Insight Guides are good for that), but there is absolutely NOTHING on when to go. Maybe someone doesn't know one of the best times to see Vermont is the fall foliage or Disney World is painfully humid and hot in July/august. Or you don't really want to see the Grand Canyon in Dec/Jan as many of the trails/roads are closed. The "where to go, what to see and what to do" parts are a rambling mess and it's basically just listing off, not really a good description of why one would want to go or whether it's worth your time. What the book is good for is to tell you what is there, in that state, but a google search or Tripadvisor on "what to see and do in ____" would be more worthwhile. But then again, it's very basic info that could possibly fit into 3/4 inch book (and not even full size 8x11) on 50 States, with 5000 ideas. Will be returning my copy :(

A fun informative book chock full of information on all 50 states (and the Canadian provinces). There are lots of ideas of things to do -- and even book, music and movie ideas to enjoy before or during the trip.

Canâ€™t believe national geographic put their name on this book. It is by far totally not worth a dollar you may find 10 ideas of things to do. It is nothing but a book naming 50 states. Somewhere they missed the title 5000 ideas. Not worth the paper it is printed on. It worked out for me Amazon took it back.

I saw this book at the library and needed to have my own copy. So much great information. What I also like is that for each state, it gives you some movies/music/books relating to that state. We travel via camper to many of these states and while some of the information may be repeated from previous books, there is a lot of new stuff in here too. A great resource to have.

I bought this for my husband thinking it would be a fun book to take on road trips but I feel like it was difficult to actually use on a casual trip. The pages are crammed with text but nothing looks unique or appealing. It's not a book that inspired me to stop at any of the travel spots and it didn't feel well researched for all the info it contains since it barely touches on anything truly unique or interesting. I will be relying on Google instead - don't bother paying for a book like this with all the free info out there.

Great book, with some wonderful pictures, and great ideas for new retirees!!

This is a fantastic book for any US travelers. It has given me some great ideas about places to go in some states that are not necessarily known for anything. Great colorful pictures.

I travel a lot so a lot of these listings I knew about. But...if you haven't done much traveling, or if you have always seemed to have a tough time figuring out where to go...this is actually a good choice for you to get.

Robert Saucy has written a helpful book that aims to define the New Testamentâ€™s teaching on the doctrine of the church. Saucy believes that this book will help resolve problems facing the church today because the Scriptures is sufficient to offer guidelines to resolve those problems. Saucy contends that â€œprogress in the churches comes not from advancing beyond the biblical patterns but from building squarely upon them.â€ That is a very clarifying statement. The issue is not simply that the church isnâ€™t doing enough but is the church standing on the right foundation? Saucy divides the book into two main logical divisions. The first is defining the life of the church or what he calls the organism of the church. He examines the meaning of the word Church not from its etymology but how it was used from a word used meant as a general assembly that developed into the more technical term for an assembly of believers gathered in the name of the Lord. The second is defining the organization of the church covering structure, discipline, and ordinances of the church.Saucy provides a great resource that is technical in parts to show the development of Christâ€™s church as He builds it while offering the veracity of Scripture to demonstrate Godâ€™s design and purpose for His church.StrengthsOne obvious strength of the book is how biblical its arguments are. Every argument laid out is supported by a number of thoughtfully chosen Scripture passages. This book is for the student of Scripture and displays exegetical care in handling simple conjunctions like kai in Gal 6:16 with utmost care. Based on sound hermeneutics the author presents a very clear and helpful explanation of the distinction between the church and Israel. Maybe my bias is showing here but he does offer a variety of views in how Gal 6:16 can be taken but concludes that Paulâ€™s usage of Israel always refers to ethnic Israel and never the church. He goes further by explaining the biblical use and meaning of â€˜seed of Abrahamâ€™ as having three areas of application: 1) the natural descendants of Abraham, (e.g. ethnic Jews), 2) reference to Christ Himself (Gal 3:16) where the ultimate posterity of Abraham is embodied in Christ, and 3) the logical conclusion of applications 1 + 2 which is that all (Jewish people) who are in Christ are spiritually of the true spiritual seed of Abraham. He makes a clarifying statement, â€œall Israelites can be called Abrahamâ€™s seed, only those of faith are Abrahamâ€™s true seed who will inherit the promises. The primary significance is therefore spiritual, and this spiritual seed is made up of true Israel as well as those outside Israel.â€He summarizes that even though both the Church and Israel are descendants of Abraham one does not equate to the other but Abraham is the father of both. He supports this by quoting Romans 4:11-12 where Abraham, â€œthe father of circumcision to them are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of faith of our father Abraham, which he had yet being uncircumcised.â€He also offers a very clarifying statement regarding how to think through the Mosaic Covenant and the New Covenant of Jer 31:33. He says, â€œthe old covenant [Mosaic covenant] could only command response, the new covenant contained provisions to effect it. The key provisions were the gracious forgiveness of sins (Jer 31:34) and the writing of the law in the heart through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit (v. 33). The result of this latter provision would be the universal knowledge of God (v. 34a).â€WeaknessOne area of weakness would be to offer balance in explaining the relation of the covenants. A lot of ink covered the relation of the Mosaic Covenant to the New Covenant but the Davidic Covenant as an amplification of the Abrahamic Covenant was only a sentence long.One area of strength was his evaluation of the three main views of church polity which are episcopal, presbyterian, and congregational by citing biblical evidence and weaknesses for each. Surprisingly he admits that Presbyterian (elder-rule) is the example shown in Scripture saying, â€œThe NT presents clear evidence that the care of the church was committed to elders.â€ He cites numerous verses to support that clear evidence yet he concludes that congregational rule is the correct view, â€œthe biblical data presents a basic congregational form of church government with local autonomy and a basic democracy.â€ I do appreciate that he uses the phrase â€œa congregational formâ€ since his view is not typical congregationalism where the congregation rules primarily. There is an emphasis on elder ruling with the church involved. I did find his argument using Rev 2-3 where the Spirit writes to the churches as an implication weak. He says, â€œresponsibilities imply authority to carry them out, thus arguing for the final authority of the church as a whole.â€ Could it be that the 7 churches in Asia Minor were being judged as a whole for their sin (with the exception of 2) and not because Christ viewed the church as a whole the ruling government?I wish Saucy would have kept that format of stating a position, showing biblical evidence, summarizing and concluding based on that evidence throughout the book.Conclusion In the main I found the whole book incredibly helpful. One area that grabbed my attention was the section on the true purpose or mission of the church was helpful. The church can fail if it loses its focus on preaching the Gospel of Christ. He says, â€œhistory reveals that the church can fail in its ministry to the world in one of two ways. It may attempt to rule through deliberately entering secular forms, or it may withdraw to individual monastic piety. Both result in a faulting of responsibility toward the worldâ€¦ the other extreme of leaving the ministry of the word in an attempt to witness through the more direct secular power has always tempted the church.. by casting aside its influence through the Word in favor of secular forms such as politics and business, the church loses its function as the servant of God.â€ How do Christians balance this? Saucy shows that the passages of good works (Matt 5:16; 1Peter 2:12; 3:1) are all intended to cause others to acknowledge God and glorify Him. In other words our involvement in politics and other secular forms is not for reformation but salvation. Our good works are to apply â€œin all areas of menâ€™s lives, and then lived by each believer in the contacts with the world in which the Lord of the church has stationed him for a witness.â€ This provides not only balance to political involvement but also in our evangelism. Saucy offers four aims for the church: toward the world (evangelism), toward itself (edification), and toward God (giving God glory in all things). Overall Saucy achieves his goal of explaining directly from the Scriptures Godâ€™s purpose and guidelines for His Church. He writes winsomely and fairly on the more divisive positions regarding the polity of the church, the gifts of the church, and the ordinances of the church.

Though slightly outdated, Robert Saucy's (pronounced Socee) work still stands as one of the best-written works to date on a biblical doctrine of the church. I will try to be brief here because this work covers so much ground. I will respond to three points his work touches upon.First, Saucy explains clearly the three main approaches to church government: Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Congregational. Though the author favors and stands with the final of these options, he does see helpful elements in each perspective and affirms that scripture does not dogmatically say which form was strictly employed by New Testament teaching and practice.Since my tradition aligns with his, that of the Bible Church Movement and Baptist Congregationalism, I tend to favor his views of church government and leadership. Do I think it always works? Absolutely not. In fact, I think our present culture calls for a revising of our approach to church government and structure. A reassessment needs to be done in this area since this idea of authority has been so fleeting in congregational churches. I think Saucy would agree. Because of this, I tend to favor the Presbyterian, elder-rule government structure. I think it gives clearer testimony to the authority invested in those he has "called" to vocational service.Though I agree with Saucy's definition of "calling" and "vocational leaders" (you'll need to read his work to get a full picture here), I feel that it still fails to do justice to the idea of church authority (or leadership) of a congregation. Though I love concepts of the Brethren movement (both open and exclusive), just as an example, I simply cannot see how those types of movements (or independent congregations) have lasting impact in rapidly-changing cultures. There is no connectivity, no "visible" authority to lead as the extended incarnation of Christ on earth (meaning his church). The gift of pastor/teacher being defined as just something "anyone can do" who allocates their full time (to paraphrase Saucy loosely) tends to depreciate the authority vested in the care giver of Christ's local body. I would agree in principle with what Saucy is saying. I hold to the priesthood of the believer so I absolutely agree in principle. But in practical application this idea of "anyone can be a pastor" tends to depreciate the gift of pastor/teacher. It is clear that every Christian has been called to vocationally serve Christ, the church, and the world (Eph. 4:1), but not every person is given the gift of pastor/teacher. Once again, I agree with all of what Saucy says in principle, I just don't think this approach (congregational autonomy from other local bodies) works well in our present culture.Secondly, Saucy does an excellent job speaking on church sacraments and the church as a mystery entity in God's program in human history. Saucy is clearly Dispensational (though he clearly aligns himself with the Progressive movement, 1986-present) in his approach and understanding of the nature and purpose of Christ's church. I find much similarity in my thinking here and appreciate his thinking which highlights a system of greater discontinuity than most give. Believe me, I love my brothers and sisters in Christ who hold to different perspectives, but I really feel like this approach puts biblical-redemptive narrative and history together more succinctly.Thirdly, his beliefs in the sacraments are largely symbolic, but tend to add an element of "real presence" as Calvin and the Reformed community have traditionally held. In the end, he lines up more with the "memorial" view and non-conformist tradition. I honestly don't mind either view as I think either can be defended from scripture well.In conclusion, I really don't think there is a more helpful introductory book for men and women preparing themselves for church ministry (in whatever form that might be). Though the book stands as an "academic", it is written in an assessable way and is readable. It deals with a teaching that has been really misconstrued within the present church, simply, "What is the Church?" and "What is its life and function?" Overall, I still believe this book is one of the best on Protestant ecclesiology. The Christian church truly is indebted to Robert Saucy for his contribution to this area of thinking. An excellent work meant to be read, reread, and referenced time and again.

The best bit about buying this book is the accompanying audio book which has helped immensely with the confusion I had regarding the pronunciation. The first book helps with finding the sounds and how to make them with English words but the help of the audio brought it all together for me which was a big help.

Started with no knowledge or education of the French language when I purchased this book and what I most enjoyed about it is that it makes sure you don't get lost in what steps should be taken.

I hate to admit it, but I had NEVER heard of this strip until I went to SDCC this summer. (Which is weird, since about 90% of what I read is comic strips, and have THOUSANDS of books dedicated to the art form.)I went by the Go Comics booth, and soon as I saw the flyer (see below) I KNEW this was going to be something I HAD TO HAVE. Both sides are SO dead on as to how my brain and heart work, I was amazed.I was also lucky enough to get a drawing from Nick, summing up how I feel about Comic Con! (see below) (Hall B has the Go Comics and Comic Society booth, as well as other faves, Sheldon by Dave Kellett, Lonnie Milsap, and Keith Knight, my faves).FINALLY, the book came out and it did NOT disappoint! The comics are funny and dead on to the struggle between what you WANNA do, and what you GOTTA do. The art is a delight and the colors REALLY pop. The book is also very well printed.Can't WAIT for another book!

True story... I pre-ordered THREE copies of this book six months before it came out. And then the day it was released, I ran to the bookstore anyway to buy a copy because I didn't want to wait for my Amazon order to arrive (the books actually arrived unexpectedly that same night, but as Awkward Yeti readers know, the heart wants what the heart wants).Why should YOU buy this book? Ask yourself: Are you a fan of utter nonsense? Have you ever felt like your brain and heart were at odds? Do you wonder what that last question would look like personified in cartoon form? What are your thoughts on pizza? Oops, sorry, I got off topic on that last one. Where was I? Oh, yeah...Nick Seluk is one of my favorite cartoonists. Okay, that's a lie. He's actually my favorite cartoonist at the moment (along with Doug Savage of Savage Chickens). I grew up with The Far Side as my all-time-favorite gold standard comic (and was heartbroken when Gary Larson stopped publishing). Likewise, Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes was clever and funny and charming, but that too ended. The Awkward Yeti, and Heart and Brain, bring back memories of these cartoons and also bring a big smile to my face.The strips combine the perfect balance of goofy drawings, endearing silliness, clever dialogue, balloon-toting butterflies, business tie-wearing brains, and an abundance of exuberant hopefulness.I'm giving away a few copies as gifts, but I will definitely keep my own copy within easy reach on the bookshelf (with room for future Awkward Yeti books to come).Indeed.

Many a time The Awkward Yeti comic has appeared in my Facebook and meme feeds from friends, acquaintances, and suggested posts. While not one of my daily amusements, I realized I had read it enough I should send some appreciation the author's way so he could continue to write this highly entertaining webcomic.So I bought a book with Awkward Yeti, featuring the characters "Heart and Brain" and enjoyed revisiting old FB memes and discovering new comics. The Brain waking the Awkward Yeti in the middle of the night with long-forgotten social disasters. The Heart running off in every direction trying to find its passion. The butterfly drifting through adding lively hope. And a couple times the stomach popping up with its own special demands, such as during a serious discussion about the most pressing questions of the time - world peace, does alien intelligence exists, and should we order nachos or pizza. (both please)If you like Awkward Yeti, send some Heart the author's way by buying one of his books. Or if you find truth in the Awkward Yeti's humor, send some Brain the author's way by posting a review from his book.

Both my heart and my brain adore this comic so much. Hilarious and true, this book is so endearing and so accurate as to how we can have conversations within our very beings when trying to decide whether to follow emotions or logic.Reading along, I found myself thinking, "Exactly, so true!" while laughing at the antics of Heart (sunshine and optimism) and Brain (logic and worry). As the two *mostly* balance each other out, it is a refreshing read I plan to go through many times.

I received this book last night and let me tell you that my mailbox and I have never been happier! I have been a fan of Seluk for years and I was over the moon when I found out there would be a print edition of my two favorite organs and butterfly. Reading these (some classics and some are new) I can't help but laugh out loud. I highly recommend this book for a friend, co-worker, a sad passerby on the street, essentially anyone with a heart and a brain!! It's a guarantee'd happy pill in book form. Buy it!!

I have loved The Awkward Yeti since the early days, and am always especially delighted when a new comic featuring the internal organs of said Yeti appears online. Out of all the organs, Heart&Brain are the most fun, and the ones I can empathize with most. So when I heard that I could own a book of NOTHING BUT Heart&Brain, I jumped at the chance! I am currently LOVING the comics (especially the never-before-seen ones!)! I am making an effort to pace myself so I can savor it and not blow through the whole thing in one sitting. I anticipate that I will be using this book for the next several years to cheer myself up when adulting gets tough. HIGHLY recommended for anyone who finds deciding between "adult responsibilities" and "utter nonsense" challenging.

This makes me so, so very happy. I wish I had a picture that demonstrates my sheer joy. Oh wait, I do. Also, Brain totally approves this credit card purchase.

Somehow in my travels mucking about social media I tripped over these comics. Within a couple of days I was reposting them everywhere, and laughing over them with friends. Heart and Brain is completely relatable, and I haven't enjoyed a comic this much--dare I say it--since Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes.The book is terrific and is mostly comics I've not seen before--and I looked up everything I could find online. It has good quality paper, and clean. bright color. This is what everyone is getting for Christmas. It's definitely deserving of five stars.
