I found the book to be an accurate outline of the basic theory of CQB. It touches on all the major considerations without going into any one subject in-depth. If you are looking for a point of reference to get a serious study underway, then this is a good place to start.It seems to be a book written in such a fashion as to promote the other books in the series, which sort of turned me off because there wasn't as much "meat on the bones" as there could have been. The book continually refers to other titles by the same author which cover the topics at greater length.If you have a good knowledge base in CQB, I would recommend skipping this title and moving directly to the more focused titles from this author.

This is an older book that has some outdated concepts in it but it is still a good book to develop Close Quarter Battle ideas and doesn't teach you too many bad habits.

Doing a little research on this book, the reader will see that it was written almost 30 years ago and published in the US 22 years ago, long before any other books were available on CQB, close quarters battle, close quarters shooting, and tactical operations. It is based on a program developed by Jack Sims, Chidokan 8th dan, at the request of the NZ SAS. The book also features Alan Brosnan, a former assault group commander for the SAS and CQB instructor. This book should be read as much as a historical perspective as a source of insight into basic CQB techniques. As with any book of this nature, it is not possible to learn unarmed combat, martial arts, or CQB from a book. You need to get in the gym and on the range and run the drills literally thousands of times. So for those of you with an interest in the history and evolution of unarmed combat, this is an excellent reference from the 80s and 90s.

The best thing in this book is the paper it is printed on; it's semi-glossy and heavy, giving some expectation of quality. The second best thing is that there is surprisingly little text, because some 1/3 of the pages are filled with photos. The fact that this is good news, tells something about the quality of the text.To start with, the entire idea of presenting the "fighting secrets" of special operations forces in a 200-page book is somewhat absurd, especially considering that the author assumes that the reader does not know virtually nothing about the subject. The techniques presented here are unrealistic in the real world, to a large extent. And finally, the author speaks way too vaguely of the issues he presents, so that you really don't have a chance to learn anything.The main part of the book concentrates on close combat. Significant amount of these pages is devoted to series of photographs. The photos are supposed to present several unarmed and armed close combat techniques, but they are so small and unclear that you are hard-pressed to figure out what they are depicting. But that's good, because you don't want to learn these techniques, anyway. One amusing thing caught my eye: The author stresses that it is imperative to train in full gear, and carry all the equipment you would be carrying in a real situatoin (that is true, but it is also self-evident). But in about half of the pictures, the guys are wearing karate uniforms!The reason I bought this book was that I expected to find something on close-quarters shooting. Granted, about the last third of the book is devoted to the subject, but there really is not anything, exept for a total beginner. And for a beginner, there are far better books around.One thing that especially annoyed me was that the author uses military jargon, apparently to get some credibility. That is the only justification for most of the jargon, as the book is filled with examples like "Any operation in the continental United States (CONUS), that ends in a shooting...", that being the only use of term CONUS in the text. The reason people use abbrevations is to save time and space with frequently used terms, which is not the case with examples like these.I would recommend this book to a pre-adolescent boy, who wants to impress his pals by how much he knows about guns and real-life combat. If that description does not fit you, stay away from this book.

This text has been around for quite a while. The basic principles on team organization and training are quite good. The sections on unarmed and knife combat are not. The author puts a little too much stock in oriental martial arts. The techniques pictured are way too dojo oriented to my mind. Still there are some useful nuggets of gold if you are willing to sift. This text is not meant for the civilian shooter at all, and there is relatively little for anyone outside the law enforcement/military community in this book. This is precisely the author's intent, so bear this in mind if you are considering this book.

This book's subtitle is "A Guide to Unarmed Combat and Close Quarter Shooting. Lonsdale is well-known in the law-enforcement training circles. I like that he presents his information as "one view, one method, one training philosophy". It is refreshing to see someone who isn't proclaiming that their method is the "one true path" to knowledge (although this method seems based extensively on the SAS style). The emphasis of the book is certainly for the professional and the complexity of the unarmed combat section will be overwhelming to those who don't have an extensive martial arts background. His training team has beau coup years of traditional martial arts experience and hold very high ranks in their disciplines (did I see Tom Muzilla of Shotokan fame in some of the photos?). This explains why all of the techniques are taken directly from karate. To these high ranks, the techniques are simple, however, to the non-martial artist, they probably seem very difficult. A consideration you should take into account. But, if you have a good background in karate, then the unarmed section is everything you already know. Lots of weapons disarms and retention techniques. Most of the second half of the book is on close quarter shooting which is detailed with good photography.

It's wonderful and very helpful/insightful. I highly recommend to any parent of an autistic child or even just one with special sensory needs.

I purchased this book a few years ago, shortly after my son was diagnosed with the second of his 5 diagnoses, Sensory Modulation Disorder (rated severe). Though I worked in healthcare, I was never clinical staff. I spent some time in management purgatory, but my favorite job was in clinical outcomes as a research analyst. So while I had some familiarity with a wide range of topics because of that, the healthcare organization I worked for dealt with mostly geriatric populations, so conditions specific to that group are the areas I was most familiar with. So, I knew enough to recognize generally what was going on with my son when all heck started breaking loose, and if there is any one thing I think I should get a gold star on it was pushing to get him evaluated early on, but I didn't have as many specifics as I felt like I needed to effectively deal with what was happening on the ground level as his mom and primary caregiver. Foamy things touching him? The gagging and always vomiting if it wasn't removed within seconds. Strong smelling cleaners: vomiting until he couldn't smell them anymore. Certain food textures? Vomiting. Over-stuffing his mouth and choking because he couldn't feel how full it was. Clothes? Medieval torture devices based on how he reacted to them. People touching him or getting too close? Hysterics, and sometimes vomiting. Needed constant motion to sleep. Extremely hyper sensitive to sounds and visual stimuli. Hours of meltdowns a day. No reaction to deep pressure impacts, even of a serious nature. Certain things touching his skin, including water? Serious freak outs. 15 minutes or more of screaming with a small scratch. Trying to dive down the stairs...because hey, he couldn't feel what it was doing to his body when he hit the bottom. Sometimes, he'd just walk up to the floor lean on his knees, and then try to crack his forehead on the tile. Yah, that one caused me to get large plush throw pillows to cover the floor with until we could get this behavior resolved and transitioned to something more appropriate with therapy. Picking up my end tables or boxes of rice milk from Costco and throwing them. I could go on, believe me. And, if you are a parent trying to figure out of this book will help you understand what is going on with your kiddo, I'm sure you could go on too about your own struggles, because some of this may sound like your kid, but he/she may have their own challenges that are uniquely theirs. And if I were there where you are, I'd give you a hug and a shoulder, because I'm sure you need it right about now.So, I think this book did a really great job of explaining the types of sensory processing disorders and some things to help with them, and you don't need a medical background at all to understand it the way she explains it. And I think this will give you some great ideas for how to explain things to the people around you, who most likely have decided that the problem is either you've messed up as a parent or that your child is just plain naughty, neither of which are true. So it can be great to have a good foundation for educating the people around you, because, as the author says in this book, “the inability to function smoothly is not because the child won't, but because he can't.”I find that, for my son, as we've been going through the process of sensory integration therapy over the last few years, his sensory issues and needs are ever changing, so I think it is great to have this as a resource to refer back to when needed. Even though my son has gone on to be diagnosed with a few other things, what I can say is that his sensory stuff, though we are still fighting that battle, is so much improved it's a joy to see. He's only vomited once in the past year for a sensory related issue. Other people can now touch him. He's touching things he would never have considered touching before and enjoying it. He's usually sleeping about 7 hours throughout the night without any sort of motion. We can take him out into public without me needing to scrub either one of us down in the bathroom. He can feel some deep pressure impacts now. This book can help you, getting a good occupational therapist can help you, and I also did purchase her book “The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun” to peruse for extra ideas for things to do at home to help encourage sensory integration as well. And I personally recommend educating yourself as much and as extensively as you have time to be able to and to not be afraid to try something new or creative if you think it may help. For me, I feel like if I've just learned one thing from an article or a book that makes a difference in improving the quality of life for my son and his ability to interact with the world, then it was time well spent. And I definitely would rate this book as being time well spent.

I ordered three copies of this book after stumbling upon the audio version on my local library app, why you may ask, we will get to that later in the review.If you have or THINK you might have a child that has Sensory Process Disorder issues, then this book is something you NEED to read. My daughter is 4 and goes to occupational therapy twice a week for SPD. I found everything in the book helpful and more so, it was comforting. Comforting to know that this IS a real thing, comforting to know that I'm not some crazy mom that searching for a "label" to smack on their kid, comforting to know that it isn't my parenting or something I'm doing wrong. This book (along with Peaceful Parent, Happy Kid which is awesome, by the way) has been a light in a first time mother's very stressful, very overwhelming, very emotional life. My daughter is hard, she is simply hard...hard to deal with, hard to approach, hard to get to listen, just hard. The smallest simplest things are battles, she was a hard newborn, a hard infant, a hard baby, a hard toddler and now a hard kid. Nothing, absolutely nothing is easy with her. It has been 4 years of battles, struggles, crying, no sleeping, noise issues, no brushing teeth, clothes issues, settling down issues, sitting still issues, eating issues, just trading one set of problems for a new set. And in this book, I saw, I wasn't alone, it isn't my parenting style, it isn't a phantom label, this is a real thing and kids and their parents struggle with it.This book tells you the science behind SPD, it tells you what to look for with real life examples, it shows you how OT can help, it explains things in ways that a sleep deprived mother can understand and find solace in. It gives you ways to help your child, it gives you hope. It is worth every single penny.Now you must still be wondering, well why did the obviously tired mother here, need THREE copies?Well, one for my husband - who is pretty supportive, however, when our child is acting off the rails, he does agree she isn't "a normal kid", wasn't completely sold on SPD. He read this book at a snails pace, but I'll give him mad props, he DID read it...and he sees our child in the same light i saw her in after reading and listening to this book.The second copy went to the MIL - cue the cricket noises, please...What i got from her after she blew through the book was...."what they describe could be ANY child" and she filled out the traits and didn't really see how her perfect little grandchild "fits" in the SPD category (AND I'm going to be petty enough to mention that this same MIL won't watch the child for more than one night because she is "exhausting"). So there was that, I think I deserve an award or at least a glass of wine for trying.The third book is for me, it sits on my desk at work. Like I mentioned before it gave me comfort and reminds me ways to best approach my sensory seeker to make both our lives easier.So there you have it. This book, although is amazing, it isn't a miracle worker and will not serve as an eye opening scientifically proven manual to those who don't believe in SPD as a "thing", but it DOES help anyone who is looking for advice, science, and answers to weather their child has Sensory Processing Disorder.

Fascinating book. Would reccomend to anyone caring for a child with SPD, or even simply sensory issues. It's a relatively easy read with a TON of practical and helpful information. My son has some sensory issues, and there are parts of this book that are like reading a day in my life. So helpful and informative, but also encouraging for those who are just beginning the journey of sensory disorders with their children. Whether a child in your life has been officually diagnosed with SPD, or you just have a child who struggles with some sensory things, things book is a great resource!NOTE: I'm all for purchasing used books, however this one might me worth buying new. There is at least one questionnaire in the book where you check off these answer that most pertains to your kid. While I was able to make it work, it would have been nice to go through the questionnaire without the markings of the previous owner.

This book really gets to the heart of any parent who has a child who isn't quite "in sync" with his/her world and/or family. There are many great explanations and possible resolutions to problems. I have two children who I have decided need some evaluation to see where they might get help for our problems. A great read with numerous resources. I highly recommend this book.

As a "newbie" to the smoking world, I needed a "BASICS" book. This explains tons of terms like what spices & herbs to use on what meats/fish/poultry, the various cuts of meat, types smokers & kid of smoking, types of wood, temps & times to use, water pans, Dry rubs, Sauces etc. It's a wonderful book with excellent "SIMPLE" recipes to get you started. I recommend it highly.

If you are new to BBQ smoking in my opinion there is no one book you can buy. Everyone that writes one has a point of view. What I have found is you really need a core of three books I have found helpful and then possibly two more. Also there is a lot on the web, but there is one site I have found particularly helpful.I have tried smoking before with bullet grills with some success, but it takes a lot of minding. I finally broke down and bought the Texas Traeger pellet grill just for smoking. I love it. Now the problem is most cookbooks on smoking do not address this type of smoker head on so if you want to lean how to really use one I have found you need to look at a variety of sources. Here is my take:Once you understand temperature in relation to smoke and timing you can translate any indirect recipe to a pellet grill or any other type of smoker. There are some tricks/tips that will enhance the cooking, but in the end it all comes down to temperature and time.Here are the books that I have found most helpful in descending order. I would invest in all five if you are serious about this. I look at two things; technical information and recipes.Slow Fire by Ray "DR. BBQ" Lampe - Excellent from a technical standpoint. A great foundation in terms of understanding smoking (slow cooking) and good basic recipes. It is the first book I would buy.Backyard BBQ The Art of Smokology by Richard W. McPeake - Great in terms of technical. If you study this book along with Lemke's you will really get a handle on the technical aspects of smoking. The recipes are pretty basic, but that is OK if you are new at this.Smoke & Spice by Cheryl Alters Jamison and Bill Jamison - OK technical, but once you have that down good recipes and good guidance on time and temperature,Championship Barbecue by Paul Kirk - Good technical compliment to the first two above. This however is more a smoke and grilling cookbook as more than half the recipes are grilled ones. He also has a habit of trying to replicate indoor recipes to the grill. I have no idea why you would do that. A lot of the recipes seem like let me throw this against the wall and see what sticks. That said he has some good smoked ones and his mustard slaughters really work, Thought everything using them would taste like a hot dog, but they enhance the flavor with no mustard taste. Obviously I am a little conflicted by this book.BBQ USA by Steven Raichlen _ more of a grilling cookbook, but he has some good smoker recipes. I am a fan of his for grilling; I have five of his cookbooks. Again from a smoking perspective this is the last of the five, but it and his others are great if you grill as well.Last do poke around the website amazingribs.com. It is not just about ribs and has a wealth of information.Do not assume that any of these recipes will be spot on in terms of your particular grill. As all the authors say you have to learn your grill so do not try any recipe for the first time for company. As many of the authors say smoked BBQ will be ready when it is done.Again it is all about learning about time and temperature for your particular grill.

This is a bit of a strange book. It's all about smoking, that part you knew, but its recipes and directions are actually in different sections. For example, a chicken recipe might discuss marinating or brining the chicken, but it won't say anything about temperature to cook at or the temperature to cook the meat to. Other sections in the book discuss cooking temperature, etc. It's a little weird, but I do like the book.The sauces I've made from the book are good, the breakdown of rubs and marinades is interesting.I have three (minor) gripes. First is that the recipe sizes for the sauces are very large (one recipe makes 2.5 quarts, I cut it down by a factor of six). The second is that the organization is a bit unwieldy: a marinade might contain a recipe for a rub on another page that contains a portion of a spice mix from another page. It's a bit jarring. The third is that it's a bit ingredient heavy. There's lemon pepper, garlic salt, corn syrup, Kitchen Bouquet, Pick-A-Peppa sauce, seasoned salt, the list goes on.Four stars. I would definitely buy it again and the recipes are solid, but there are a few issues.*** UPDATE 4/13/2013 ***I should really add that the "Take My Breath Away" BBQ Sauce is amazing and is easily my favorite sauce.

My family LOVES when I bust this book out and start mixing rubs and marinades and mops...the end products are delicious, full of many layers of flavors, while the meat is always fall-apart-tender and moist. If I could, I would rate the recipes a 5, and the writing and organization a 3. So I met in the middle, giving the book an overall 4. But, to me, the recipes are what really matter. I have tried many of the recipes, all are worth the flipping back and forth from the marinade recipe to the rub recipe to mop recipe to the time recommendations, etc. They are also worth the many ingredients that are called for.However, I do not agree with the few 5 star reviews that report that the book is "easy to follow" or for beginners. I believe beginners may get overwhelmed trying to find their way through 3 or 4 recipes just to make one smoked product. Also, I have "guessed" a few times, as I wasn't quite clear on parts of some of the recipes, but everything has always turned out great, so I guess I guessed well!I do not agree, either, with the one and two star reviews which complain that grammar and organization make the book a disaster. I don't recall any of them reporting that they actually tried any of the recipes. How can you rate a cookbook without trying the recipes? That does not seem fair.Just a note also highlighted by other reviewers; the recipes tend to be way too large for the amount a single family would require, but I have taken time to quarter or third them for more appropriate proportions.Ultimately, my family has loved every recipe I have tried, from chicken, to pork (ribs, loin, and pulled), to jambalaya and smoked mushrooms. Smoking meats is somewhat laborious, but oh-so worth it! If you enjoy savory, melt-in-your-mouth smoked meats, it is worth it to give the recipes in this book a try.Recommended!

Very simple ingredient recipe book and one that my lifetime chef liked to use...which in itself tells you this is the book to buy. I borrowed his and after browsing through the book and seeing how simple the recipes were with normal spices, I had to have my own. I have now cooked several different items out of the book and all of them have tasted great and were easy to prepare with the use of this book.

Overall I enjoyed this book. The text was very readable and engaging. The story of the authors' journey across Europe to discover mushrooms in sacred art read like a well-paced thriller. They spent quite a bit of time on their backstory with their experiences of psychedelic substances, which set the scene for their interest in finding the importance of mushrooms in Christian art. The reason I give it a 4 star instead of 5 is that after presenting all this backstory and the handful of depictions of mushrooms, the end of the book seemed to fall off this kind of precipice. They had a chapter that discussed the possible use of entheogens in Jesus' time based on loose readings of the for canonical gospels and some of the Gnostic gospels and then just sort of said that's it, where should this study go from here? The rest of the book read like a study proposal and suggestions for decriminalizing natural psychoactive substances, which I thought was a departure from the main point of the book.

It's a page-turner! I'm impressed by the impeccable scholarship and research that went into this work. "The Psychedelic Gospels" is an entertaining delight of thought-provoking exploration. Beyond the years of study that underlie the story, there's a feeling of synchronicity and synergy. It's a love story, as a husband and wife make discovery after discovery, leading to a reconsideration of the foundations and roots of Christianity. This is an authoritative and fascinating contribution to the study of human religion; particularly with regard to entheogens and their place in spiritual practices worldwide. I love the sense of shared exploration, and especially the amazing art revealed. The mysticism and ritual of sacred psychedelic symbolism woven into early Christian artworks are mind-blowing, hidden in plain sight. With this book, we join an unimagined journey.

Like the other very favorable reviews (most here are), I find this book enlightening and, after reading the last chapter calling for the formation of a committee of diverse backgrounds to further assess the authors' findings and conclusions, quite possible a very important book. I already think it is but would like to follow what an eventual cross-pollinated committee would find. Being a retired university professor and one trained in academic research, I very much like the way the authors (one of which is an academic and the other a therapist) use specific criteria for their observations to be admitted as evidence. The observation journey to parts of the world are fascinating as well as Julie's photographs of the observations being admitted for evidence. I am 67 years old but as early as 4th or 5th grade I thought much of what I was hearing in our Methodist churches had to be symbols and should not be taken literally. But I now live in the 'bible belt" of the US and find that most people here do take things very literally from their translation of the bible and what their preachers tell them. I hope that Jerry and Julie's book continues in the trend of offering something to enlighten Christians to other views, which they can confirm or refute on their own. But at least the world has a fascinating and well written set of hypotheses and conclusions to consider. I look forward to following their further work.

A wonderfully researched book with abundant source photos that should prove beyond any doubt that there was an esoteric psychedelic community in Christianity for well over a thousand years. A practice that presumably still has adherents in the private sphere. The narrative is strongly reinforced by the results of the FDA's approved research at John Hopkins that gave 36 non illegal drug using religious people a strong dose of psilocybin, the active ingredient from these mushrooms. The goal was to see if a true mystical could be reliable produced in this manner and it did for about two-thirds of the participants. The visible return of interest in mysticism cannot but enrich the contemporary religious experience in a very important ecumenical manner. The authors are due much thanks and appreciation for their explorations.

I truly hope this post will help others like myself who would like to follow The Clean Program in it's entirety, but who does not have $450.00 for the "Rebuild Kit." I looked everywhere, but I wasn't really able to find a clear breakdown of what each of these supplements actually are and what a close match might be should I decide to purchase them individually. So, now that I have taken the time to do the research myself, and have broken down The Clean Program's Rebuild Kit, I would like to offer my determination to anyone else out there looking for this information. If you are interested in getting the supplements but don't have the finances for the kit like myself, you may want to consider the below listed supplements instead. In all, I would say I spent appx. $100-$150.00 which is a big jump from the $450.00 kit! Keep in mind, none of the supplements are required and many people have been very successful without purchasing any of the supplements at all!!! There are plenty of other reviews to support this statement. This will allow you to confirm the main ingredients in the products before you purchase anything if you don't want to just take my word for it. Again, $450.00 was not an option to me but I want to follow the program as closely as possible. They also have a shopping list that you can get an idea of the groceries you will want to get in preparation of The Elimination Diet.I REALLY HOPE THIS INFO PROVES USEFUL TO ATLEAST ONE PERSON! I PERSONALLY WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY APPRECIATIVE TO HAVE HAD THIS INFO AT HAND :-)

The Clean Program itself is really great, but this book was hard to get through. Two thirds of it is telling me how toxic and horrible the environment is and why I need to do a cleanse, but I imagine that most people who buy the book are already invested and didn't need convincing. I kept waiting to find out what the cleanse actual entails! The cleanse process is only a short piece of the book and is not organized in an easy-to-follow way (e.g., Step 1: pre-cleanse/elimination, Step 2: cleanse). Even the recipes are organized in a confusing manner, with there being two different groupings of categories of food (i.e., Shakes section, then soups, then chicken, ....then back to another shakes section, another chicken section). I found myself going to the online resources on the clean website (the manual and the support section's manual) rather than referring back to the book. All the important pieces about how to follow the program, including recipes, are online. This book wasn't worth buying, in my opinion, although the cleanse itself was really great to follow.

Changed my whole outlook on food. I lost 10 lb during the detox, gained tons of energy, and figured out why I’ve had chronic stomach pain my whole life: sugar. This book is a life changer. I highly recommend it. After my detox, I went back to eating like I used to and gained back most of the weight and began to feel sluggish. My stomach pains returned as well. Some of my food cravings were gone completely-like coffee. I am now going to cut out many of the junk food because that diet truly made me feel so good. I used to eat tons of fast food and this forced me to start cooking and I actually enjoy eating my own food now.

I think this book is poorly put together. It has a very limited list of foods that are allowed/disallowed. Many foods are not on either list. Moreover many of the recipes in the book use peppers, soy, tomatoes, etc. that are on the list of foods not allowed. That kind of inconsistency makes it very hard to use and and makes me suspect the integrity of the program.

This is the book that changed my life. As a recovered anorexic, I've long struggled to learn how to eat to nourish my body for the long-term. Dr. Junger's Clean Program provided the education I had been "craving" and helped me learn to think of food in a new way. Through the 21-day elimination diet, I discovered a severe reaction to gluten and was subsequently diagnosed with Celiac Disease, a fact that causes me to wonder if the discomfort I felt after eating might have contributed to my early onset anorexia. (I was an underweight 7 year old when I began to deprive myself of food.) Today, I am at a healthy weight. I look forward to my Clean smoothies and to making my Clean meals from scratch. I look HEALTHY, truly HEALTHY for the first time in my life. At age 44, my skin glows and my eyes sparkle. And I feel amazing. I've introduced this book to friends, clients and relatives and have seen them enjoy beautiful results, too. For me, though, Clean isn't just a book, it's a lifestyle. And I'm so glad I've been able to embrace that.

I'm not finished reading it yet, but it's excellent an I'm already eating most of the stuff so I can't wait to actually do it for three weeks an see results. I won't actually be starting it until 2nd week of June but u sure will update you. I actually sent the book to someone that won't be able to do it until she's released from prison but I'm in Hope's she reads it an studies it an shares it. We have a serious problem in this world an it's eating processed food. I stopped a few yrs back but during hurricane Maria I had no choice. I ate what I could get. I felt so sick I had to leave this island for a couple months to cleanse. Thank you for this marvelous book .
